CompTIA Security+ SY0-701 Study Plan: A 6-Week Roadmap
A week-by-week Security+ SY0-701 plan with domain hours, the practice-question rhythm that works, and the exam-day tactics that add points.
Security+ SY0-701 rewards a specific kind of preparation - broad exposure over depth, disciplined practice questions, and comfort with performance-based questions (PBQs). This roadmap is built from what actually passed 2026 candidates on the first try, not from the marketing on training platforms.
§Understand the SY0-701 blueprint
| Domain | Weight | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| General Security Concepts | 12% | CIA, zero-trust, control types - definitions |
| Threats, Vulnerabilities and Mitigations | 22% | Attack types plus what stops them |
| Security Architecture | 18% | Cloud, on-prem, hybrid design |
| Security Operations | 28% | Logging, incident response, forensics |
| Security Program Management and Oversight | 20% | Governance, risk, third-party, awareness |
§The 6-week plan
Week 1 - General concepts and threat landscape
Read Domain 1 twice - once fast, once slow with sticky-notes on unfamiliar terms. Start Domain 2 by mapping attacks to controls. This is the pattern the exam tests: given an attack, choose the mitigation.
Week 2 - Architecture and cryptography
Cloud reference architectures and cryptographic use cases dominate this week. Memorise which algorithm goes with which purpose (AES for data at rest, ECC for modern TLS, SHA-256 for integrity) rather than memorising math.
Week 3 - Operations and incident response
This is the highest-weighted domain. Build a small home SIEM with Elastic or Wazuh so you have actually seen an alert, escalated it and closed it. PBQs on operations reward hands-on familiarity.
Week 4 - GRC, awareness and third-party risk
Domain 5 is heavy on terminology - RPO, RTO, MTBF, SLA, SOC 2 vs ISO 27001. Make a one-page cheatsheet, review it daily, and then never open the textbook chapter again.
Week 5 - Full-length mocks
Sit two 90-question timed mocks. Review every wrong answer, tag by domain, and rebuild your weakest domain with fresh reading.
Week 6 - PBQ drilling and light review
PBQs sink otherwise-strong candidates because they show up first and burn time. Do 30 PBQs minimum. Learn to skip and return - the exam lets you flag and come back.
§Practice-question rhythm
- 20 questions per day minimum from week 2
- Always review - right and wrong - until you can explain without the key
- Two timed mocks in the last 10 days
- Aim for 85% on final mock; the real exam feels harder
"I stopped rewatching video courses in week three and started drilling 30 questions a night. My mock scores climbed from 68 to 88 in nine days."
§Exam-day tactics
- PBQs first - flag if stuck
- Read the last sentence of the question first
- Eliminate two options aggressively
- Trust your first instinct on multiple choice
§Frequently asked questions
Is Security+ still worth it in 2026?
Yes. It remains the most-requested entry-level cybersecurity certification, a DoD 8140 baseline, and unlocks interview shortlisting at almost every large employer.
Can I pass Security+ in one month?
Possible with IT experience and full-time study. For most people with a full-time job, six weeks at 10 hours per week is safer.
What score do I need to pass Security+?
You need 750 out of 900 - roughly 75% of unweighted questions correct.
Which materials should I actually buy?
One reputable textbook, one video course you can watch at 1.5x, and a large question bank. Do not buy three courses - you will finish none of them.
