Post-Quantum Cryptography Certifications (2026 Preview)

NIST finalised its first three post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards in August 2024 - ML-KEM, ML-DSA and SLH-DSA. Enterprise migration timelines now run through 2030. Certification supply is thin but growing, and 2026 is the year to build early credibility.

Every organisation with regulatory obligations - banking, government, healthcare, defence - now needs a written PQC migration plan. Security engineers who can lead that work are scarce and command significant premiums.

§Certifications available or emerging in 2026

CertificationStatus 2026Value
(ISC)² PQC micro-credentialAvailableFoundational - best for CISSP holders
IACR-associated academic coursesAvailableDeep but non-vendor
Cloud provider PQC modules (AWS, Google)Rolling out through 2026Strong practical value
Vendor HSM-specific PQC training (Thales, Utimaco)AvailableNiche but well-paid

§How to prepare without a certification

  • Read NIST SP 800-208 and the finalised FIPS 203, 204 and 205
  • Deploy open-source PQC libraries (liboqs, OpenSSL 3.2+ providers) in a lab
  • Publish a migration-readiness assessment for a hypothetical enterprise
  • Follow the NCCoE Migration to Post-Quantum Cryptography project
"Every financial services CISO I have spoken to in 2026 needs a PQC migration plan. Very few have the internal talent to write one. That gap is your opportunity."

§Who should invest in this now

  • Senior security engineers within five years of a CISO or principal role
  • Cryptography-adjacent developers (TLS, VPN, HSM, KMS work)
  • Government and defence contractors

§FAQs

Do I need advanced maths?

For applied migration work, no - a working understanding of the standards is enough. For research or algorithm design, yes.

Is quantum computing already breaking encryption?

No - but harvest-now-decrypt-later attacks are real, and 2026 migrations are being driven by that risk, not by immediate quantum threats.
