Google Professional Cloud Architect: Complete Roadmap
PCA is Google Cloud's flagship architect exam and consistently ranks in the highest-paying certs worldwide. Here's the 12-week plan and case study strategy.
The Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect exam has been on Global Knowledge's Top-Paying IT Certifications list every year since 2019. And it's not by accident - the exam is genuinely hard, and passers are rare enough that market rates stay high. Two hours, 50–60 questions, USD 200, no on-screen calculator, four case studies you're expected to have memorized. Here's the plan that actually gets people through it.
§What PCA tests
The exam blueprint has six domains, but the killer is the four official case studies published by Google: EHR Healthcare, Helicopter Racing League, Mountkirk Games, TerramEarth. Roughly 20–25% of your exam questions map to these. Read them until you can recite each company's compliance and scale requirements from memory.
| Domain | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1. Design and plan cloud solution architecture | Business + technical requirements |
| 2. Manage and provision infrastructure | Compute, storage, networking design |
| 3. Design for security and compliance | IAM at scale, VPC-SC, data residency |
| 4. Analyze and optimize processes | Cost, performance, reliability tradeoffs |
| 5. Manage implementation | IaC, CI/CD, testing strategies |
| 6. Ensure solution and operations reliability | SLO/SLI, monitoring, incident response |
§12-week plan
- Week 1–2: Deep read of all 4 case studies. Take notes on constraints, then re-read weekly.
- Week 3–4: Compute architecture - Compute Engine sizing, GKE cluster design, Cloud Run vs GKE
- Week 5–6: Data platform choices - BigQuery vs Bigtable vs Spanner vs Cloud SQL vs Firestore
- Week 7: Networking design - VPC design, Shared VPC, VPC Peering, Interconnect vs VPN
- Week 8: Security - VPC Service Controls, Cloud KMS envelope encryption, Binary Authorization
- Week 9: Migration strategies - lift-and-shift vs refactor vs re-architect, Migrate for Compute Engine
- Week 10: Cost + operations - committed use discounts, sustained use discounts, SLO design
- Week 11–12: Full-length practice exams, case study drills, weak-area review
§The four case studies you MUST know cold
Google's questions on case studies aren't fair to skim-readers. They'll reference specific line items like 'the ATV telemetry data must be processed within 15 minutes of arrival' - that only exists in the TerramEarth case study. If you haven't read it 5+ times, you'll miss the right answer.
- EHR Healthcare - HIPAA compliance, hybrid connectivity, data residency in US
- Helicopter Racing League - global low-latency streaming, ML inference at edge
- Mountkirk Games - mobile game analytics, Spanner for global consistency
- TerramEarth - IoT telemetry from 20M vehicles, Pub/Sub + Bigtable + BigQuery pipeline

§PCA salary - why it's on the Top 10 highest paying list
| Location | PCA-certified architect |
|---|---|
| Dhaka, Bangladesh | BDT 220k–400k/mo (rare, big banks/agencies) |
| Dubai, UAE | AED 28k–42k/mo |
| Riyadh, KSA | SAR 32k–48k/mo |
| Remote (US) | USD 8k–14k/mo |
| Global average (per Global Knowledge 2024) | USD 175,000/year |
§The case study strategy that actually works
On exam day, when you hit a case study block, do NOT re-read the case. Instead pull up your mental notes: What was the primary compliance requirement? Where is the data centered? What's the latency SLA? What did they explicitly say NOT to do (usually one sentence like 'no on-prem hardware refresh')? Answer against those constraints. If two options fit, pick the one that requires the least operational overhead - Google's exams reward managed-service choices.
"I failed my first PCA attempt in mid-2024 with 62%. I had studied services but hadn't read the case studies enough. Second attempt three months later, after reading each case 8+ times, I passed with clear margin."
§FAQ
Is PCA harder than AWS SAP?
Comparable. AWS SAP has more services to memorize; GCP PCA has more judgment nuance.
Do I need ACE before PCA?
Not officially. Practically: skipping ACE is very risky unless you use GCP daily at work.
How much is PCA in Bangladesh?
USD 200 standard. Available at Kryterion Dhaka center or online proctored.
How long is PCA valid?
2 years. Renewal is a shorter recertification exam.
Which pays more, AWS SAP or GCP PCA?
Roughly equivalent in the US. In the Middle East, AWS SAP has 15–25% more open positions right now.
