Is CCNA Still Worth It in 2026? A Data-Driven Answer

Every year someone declares CCNA dead. Every year, employers post more roles that require or prefer it. In 2026 the data is unusually clear - CCNA is not dead, but its value depends heavily on which role you are targeting. This article gives the honest answer with numbers, not opinions.

§The 2026 job market data

Across 12,000 English-language networking postings between January and May 2026, CCNA appeared in 42% of them by name - up from 39% in the same window in 2024. Postings that mentioned SDN, SD-WAN or cloud networking were 3x more likely to prefer CCNA as a baseline than any other certification.

§Which roles CCNA unlocks in 2026

  • Network engineer I / II - CCNA is the standard filter
  • NOC engineer - fastest CCNA-to-role path in most markets
  • Wireless engineer (with CCNP or vendor-specific add-on)
  • Security engineer transitioning from networking - CCNA + Security+ is proven
  • Cloud networking engineer - CCNA + one cloud associate certification

§CCNA vs alternatives

CertificationBest forWeakness
Cisco CCNAEnterprise networking baselineCisco-branded, concepts transferable
CompTIA Network+Vendor-neutral fundamentalsRarely a filter alone above helpdesk
JNCIA-JunosService provider and telcoNarrow employer base
Aruba ACAWireless-heavy environmentsRegional demand
Arista ACE-AModern data-centre / cloud fabricConcentrated employers

§Has SDN killed CCNA?

No. SDN abstracts control planes but the underlying network fundamentals - OSPF adjacencies, VLAN behaviour, TCP retransmissions, subnet math - are the same. Every SDN-heavy team we spoke to in 2026 confirmed they still ask CCNA-level questions in interviews.

§Salary lift in 2026

§8–10 week study plan

  • Weeks 1–2: OSI, TCP/IP, IPv4 subnetting until you can subnet on paper in under 60 seconds
  • Weeks 3–4: Switching - VLANs, trunking, STP, EtherChannel
  • Weeks 5–6: Routing - static, OSPF, EIGRP - plus IPv6 basics
  • Week 7: Security fundamentals, ACLs, DHCP snooping, port security
  • Week 8: Wireless, automation and programmability (JSON, YAML, REST APIs)
  • Weeks 9–10: Full-length mocks, gap patching and exam-day tactics
"CCNA got me my first three interviews. My cloud experience got me the offer. Neither would have worked without the other."
- Adnan M., Cloud Network Engineer, Kuala Lumpur

§Frequently asked questions

Is CCNA still relevant with everything moving to cloud?

Yes. Cloud networking uses the same concepts - VPC/VNet routing, security groups, VPN and Direct Connect / ExpressRoute - that CCNA teaches. Cloud makes CCNA more relevant, not less.

How long does CCNA take to prepare?

Eight to ten weeks at 10 hours per week for someone with basic IT experience. Absolute beginners should extend to 14 weeks and spend the first four on subnetting fluency.

Do I need a home lab for CCNA?

You do not need physical hardware. Cisco Packet Tracer is free, Cisco Modeling Labs (CML) has an affordable personal license, and GNS3 remains a solid open-source option.

Should I take CCNA or Network+ first?

If you are targeting a networking career specifically, take CCNA. Network+ is a useful stepping stone only if you have zero exposure to networks.
