AWS Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03) - Complete 2025 Roadmap
SAA-C03 is the most valuable associate-level cert in cloud right now. Here's the 45-day plan, service priorities, and honest look at what passing means for your salary.
The SAA-C03 is the exam recruiters actually ask about. It's the cloud version of what CCNA used to be for networking - the door-opener. And in 2025 AWS has quietly made it harder by tilting more questions toward cost-optimization scenarios and multi-account architectures. Here's the 45-day plan that's worked for the last four engineers I've coached through it.
§SAA-C03 in one paragraph
130 minutes, 65 questions, mostly scenario-based. Pass mark is 720/1000, scaled. USD 150 exam fee. Available at Pearson VUE and online. Four domains matter, but domain 2 (Secure Architectures) is the trickiest.
| Domain | Weight | Highest-yield services |
|---|---|---|
| Design Resilient Architectures | 26% | Multi-AZ, ASG, ELB, Route 53 policies |
| Design Secure Architectures | 30% | IAM, KMS, Secrets Manager, VPC endpoints |
| Design High-Performing Architectures | 24% | S3 classes, EBS types, Aurora, ElastiCache |
| Design Cost-Optimized Architectures | 20% | Instance types, Savings Plans, S3 lifecycle |
§The 45-day plan
- Week 1: Core (EC2, VPC, EBS, S3, IAM) - build a hands-on lab in your free-tier account
- Week 2: Networking + DNS (Route 53 routing policies, CloudFront, VPC peering, Transit Gateway)
- Week 3: Databases (RDS Multi-AZ vs read replicas, Aurora, DynamoDB, ElastiCache Redis vs Memcached)
- Week 4: Application integration (SQS, SNS, EventBridge, Step Functions, API Gateway)
- Week 5: Security deep dive (KMS, Secrets Manager, IAM roles vs users, resource policies)
- Week 6: Cost + monitoring (CloudWatch, Cost Explorer, Trusted Advisor, Compute Savings Plans)
- Final week: 3 full-length practice exams. Target 85%+ on Jon Bonso's TutorialsDojo before booking
§Setting up your free-tier lab
Every SAA candidate in Bangladesh asks 'do I really need to spend on AWS?' The answer is no, if you use the free tier carefully. Sign up with a credit card that has BDT 500 available (AWS pre-auth), set a billing alarm at USD 5, and follow these rules:
- Always terminate NAT Gateways, ALBs, and RDS instances when not in use - they burn free tier fast
- Use t2.micro or t3.micro only (free-tier eligible for 12 months)
- Keep S3 usage under 5 GB, EBS under 30 GB
- Turn off CloudTrail data events unless needed for a lab
§Services you can safely skim vs must master
| Must know cold | Know basics | Safe to skim |
|---|---|---|
| EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, RDS | Kinesis, Lambda, SQS/SNS, CloudFront | AppStream, WorkSpaces, Snowball |
| Route 53, EBS, KMS, Auto Scaling | Aurora, DynamoDB, ECS/EKS concepts | Braket, IoT, Ground Station |
| Multi-AZ vs multi-region tradeoffs | Storage Gateway modes, DataSync | Glue, Athena (concept only) |
§AWS SAA salary - Bangladesh, UAE, and remote
| Location | Junior (SAA + 1 yr) | Mid (SAA + 3 yrs) |
|---|---|---|
| Dhaka, Bangladesh | BDT 60k–100k/mo | BDT 120k–200k/mo |
| Dubai, UAE | AED 12k–17k/mo | AED 20k–28k/mo |
| Riyadh, KSA | SAR 13k–18k/mo | SAR 22k–32k/mo |
| Remote (US clients) | USD 3k–5k/mo | USD 6k–10k/mo |
§Which practice exams to trust
- Jon Bonso's TutorialsDojo SAA-C03 practice tests - the closest to real exam difficulty
- Stephane Maarek's SAA-C03 practice tests on Udemy - good supplement
- Neal Davis's Digital Cloud practice exams - solid but slightly easier than real
- AWS official practice exam - free with re/Start or certification vouchers, use for pacing
If you're scoring under 80% on Jon Bonso's exams, don't book yet. Real SAA is harder than Stephane's tests but comparable to Jon Bonso's.
§Booking from Bangladesh
Pearson VUE test centers in Dhaka accept AWS bookings. OnVUE (online proctored) is more reliable for AWS than for Cisco - the check-in software is more forgiving. Book at aws.amazon.com/certification. Pay with any international card (bKash-based virtual cards work if enabled).
§FAQ
Is SAA-C03 harder than SAA-C02?
Marginally. More scenario complexity, more multi-account questions. The blueprint is fundamentally similar.
How many questions can I miss?
Pass is 720/1000 scaled. Roughly 15–20 wrong out of 65 is the safe zone, though the scoring is non-linear.
Do I need AWS work experience?
No, but you need hands-on lab time - at least 40 hours. The exam punishes pure theory.
How long is AWS SAA valid?
3 years. Renew by passing the current version, taking any AWS professional or specialty exam, or completing AWS Skill Builder recertification.
Should I get SAA or the AWS Cloud Practitioner first?
If you have any IT background, skip CCP and go straight to SAA. CCP is only worth it for non-technical roles.
