AWS Certification Roadmap 2026: What's New
AWS retired two exams and refreshed three more for 2026. Here is the current path - foundational to specialty - and which order actually pays.
AWS made three material changes to its certification portfolio going into 2026 - one retirement, one new exam, and one refresh. This roadmap reflects those changes and the new market reality for AWS-certified candidates.
§What changed for 2026
- The Database Specialty (DBS-C01) was retired in April 2024 and has not been replaced - data workloads are now assessed inside the Data Engineer Associate exam
- AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) and Machine Learning Engineer Associate (MLA-C01) are now stable and hiring against them is real
- Solutions Architect Associate SAA-C03 is being refreshed to SAA-C04 in mid-2026 with heavier generative-AI and Bedrock content
§The 2026 path
Foundational - Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02)
Optional for career changers, useful for non-engineering staff. Engineers should skip it and go directly to Associate level.
Associate - start with Solutions Architect Associate
SAA remains the highest-value associate exam in 2026. Follow it with Developer Associate if you write code daily, or SysOps if you work in operations.
Specialty - pick one, not three
Security Specialty and Advanced Networking Specialty remain the two highest-paying badges. Machine Learning Engineer Associate is the new must-have for anyone within a year of an AI-focused role.

Should I wait for SAA-C04?
No. C03 credentials remain valid for three years after the transition. Take the current exam, then upgrade later if your role requires it.
